The examiner Lippo, who is also the Chief Warden of the tower, uses him and other prisoners to test the examinees. Bendot and four other long-term convicts then block Gon, Killua, Leorio, Kurapika and Tonpa's path when they are trying to reach the bottom of the tower and challenge them to a best-of-five series. For each hour they can stall the applicants, 1 year will be reduced from their sentences.
Bendot fights in the first match against Tonpa and he proposes a fight to the death. Tonpa however admits defeat immediately after the start signal to sabotage the efforts his fellow examinees. This is accidentally a wise decision on Tonpa's part because according to Killua, Bendot was probably a mercenary and would have tortured Tonpa without killing him until Phase Three is over to gain a full 72 year sentence reduction[2]. He is later challenged by Killua, but seeing how the kid has killed Johness the Dissector so effortlessly, he dares not to take up the challenge[3]. In the end, he has 50 years cut from his sentence.
